Millwright Local 2309 – The First Canadian Millwright Local
UBC Millwright Local 2309 is one of eight affiliated Local Unions of The Millwright Regional Council – Canada (MRC), United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America (UBC) across the Province of Ontario.
We represent thousands of woman and men working as progressive cross-trained construction and maintenance professionals with exceptional skills to install, maintain, diagnose, and repair precision machinery.
UBC millwrights are vital partners in industries as diverse as energy, automotive, aerospace, food processing, pharmaceuticals and more.
The first Millwrights’ union in Canada was formed in Toronto in 1876. When the UBCJA chartered its first Local Union in Toronto the Millwrights applied for affiliation and were admitted in 1884. One of these early pioneer members was Brother Harry Lloyd, who was later elected General President of the Brotherhood from 1896 – 1898.
Local 2309 has the distinction of being the first Millwright Local Union chartered in Canada that stemmed the growth of millwrights throughout the country. Our charter was issued July 6, 1950 and at that time we had only 16 members. Today, we can proudly point to a growing membership of over 1400.
As we mark 72 years of continued success and progress, we recall the devoted work of many members, and particularly Basil ‘Bud’ Clark, who was the first business representative of Local 2309, holding the post until he became secretary of the Toronto District Council in 1964.
The term “Millwright” is a time-honoured one. Sir William Fairbaine wrote in 1889 that the word “conveyed the idea of a person marked by everything that was ingenious and skillful”.
